SharkCollege Aliwal Shoal

We hold SharkCollege in KwaZulu-Natal on the East Coast of
South Africa on the Aliwal Shoal.

The Aliwal Shoal is 5 kms out from Umkomaas which is 50 kilometres south of Durban. During July, August and September the Spotted Ragged-toothed Shark is seen. The reef at Aliwal is formed by a
rugged, rocky substrate well grown with sponge and other reef invertebrates, interspersed with sand patches.
Here, the ever-increasing quantities of Indian Ocean fishes often
outnumber the southern species, giving Aliwal a tropical flavour
despite the water temperatures being 19°C-20°C.

All launches are a surf launch in semi-rigid inflatable boats.
The conditions are not resort type and the boat ride to the Shoal is approx. 30 minutes and can be rough depending on the sea
conditions.

Andy Cobb the Sharkproject Ambassador to SA and honorary member will be running the Sharkcollege.

Andy has over 900-hours logged with sharks only, over the last 26-years and recorded shark behaviour and written a book, which has been accepted by a publisher and should be out by Jan 2010. Andy has been running shark and marine educationals since 1991 and introduced over 700-divers to sharks. Andy was the first Underwater and Shark Diving Guide and Trainer and Assessor of Underwater Marine and Shark Diving Guides of SA.
